It's from Vasubandhu's Trisvabhāvanirdeśa, though I don't know whether it appears in earlier texts (and it's debated, I believe, whether that text was actually authored by Vasubandhu)

Perhaps relatedly, the Chinese term for phenomenology (現象學) contains the character for elephant (象): "...whatever compels the people into imagining the Real is also called '象 (elephant).'" —Hanfeizi The "appearances of the Real" (現象) are the elephant's skeletal remains.
