My reading of the Vimalakirti Sutra was that the fragrance somehow smelled like the Buddha's teachings. This seems to be a different idea -- that the fragrance was an example of pratitya samutpada/sunyata and the speaker figured it out based on that data.

I agree with your reading of this passage. But why did you read the VKS as being about a fragrance smelling *like* the Buddha's teachings? The most relevant passage seems to be: "It is not the case that the Buddha teaches dharma […] 1/2
