What if the question "what," itself, missed the point entirely?

Certainly it could have been asked as "Who" it was hoped to depersonalize the question reducing it to a question of mechnics. Way too many "I selfs" in the way as it is. Facing ones own lack of authenticity is a difficult pill.

Both "who" and "what" seem to assume a substance of some sort. The very point may be not to assume any substance whatsoever.

Trying to find my way to an understanding of how the term "substance" is to be understood It seems likely that the term is used to point at the affective reaction to some more material event What is real need not be moved by what is ephemeral it has no substance beyond its passin

Directly connected to the question of substance is the question of self. "In his previous life, Bāhiya was a monk under the Buddha Kassapa" If no self exists how is it that Bahiya lived a previous life? What agency was responsible for Bahiya instructions from beyond?pic.twitter.com/DRkVoxTFEW

Generally, we have to speak in terms that are readily understood, terms that conform to worldly convention. "His," "previous life," "Bāhiya," "a monk," and "the Buddha Kassapa" are all constructs that most people would agree to employ for the sake of communication. 1/

Otherwise, how are we to hold a conversation? Such constructs help with conceptually organizing experience, but they do not map directly onto experience itself. 2/

At least in Buddhism, such terms are mere expressions without substantial referents. They are not to be reified as ultimately or inherently existing, but may be wielded for conventional communication. On this subject, see the Arahanta Sutta (SN 1.25): https://suttacentral.net/sn1.25/en/sujato … 3/

Likewise, rebirth is a construct that helps with conceptually organizing the impersonal processes of cause and effect (also constructs) across time (another construct). 4/

As a construct, "rebirth" helps demarcate frameworks of shifting karmic momentum (yet another construct) but does not require personal continuity of an unchanging substance. 5/

One can perhaps visualize this through either the Heraclitean notion "one never steps in the same river twice" or the first law of thermodynamics pertaining to the conservation of energy, which is constantly transforming. No self persists in either of these cases. 6/

Unfortunately, both are imperfect metaphors, so can't capture the exact meaning. Hopefully they are at least helpful in illustrating the basic pattern. 7/
