In the Bāhiya Sutta, the Buddha appears to provide instructions on unmediated awareness. That which is seen (diṭṭha), heard (suta), sensed (muta), and cognized (viññāta) are simply seen, heard, sensed, and cognized. 1/
Thanks for the continued conversation. If you're not already familiar, process metaphysics might help shed some light on the meaning of "substance" while offering an alternative framework, at least from a philosophical angle. 1/

The way I've been using the term, a substance is any"thing" with fixed/unchanging identity - whether material or immaterial. Language conventions revolve heavily around substance, so the alternate process model may not make much sense at first. 2/

I am unfamiliar with the term process metaphysics though perhaps intimately familiar with the concept. For over 40 years my personal efforts have been to consciously engage the process of coming into presence.
