Positive reason: some sort of connection. “Oh! I trained there too; I really like xyz.” Or “That center was really conducive to xyz.” Age is related to how most Asian cultures just speak to one another which is in monastic culture - specific modes of address related to age.

The question "how many rains?" (vassa in Pāli) for monastic "age" has always sounded poetic to my ears. It's usually asked for the sake of discerning appropriate terms for addressing someone, somewhat like the big/lil part before sis/bro.
