So I was gathering info on the long retreat from DhammaOverground and I found many interesting discussions on Dark Night of Soul. https://www.dharmaoverground.org/discussion/-/message_boards/message/16879352 …

I am familiar with this kind of experience. A couple of the replies were good. Our modern disenchanted worldview tends to make us ill-equipped to comprehend what inner change really means/requires. This has carried over into the way meditation practice is presented...

particularly in modern dharma scene broadly speaking. Difficult to put finger on, but that disenchantment part is significant. Reduces exp. of consc. to some personal 'mental' factor, despite a metaphysic orientation to no-self. Sth. crucial tends to be incidentally filtered out.

Check out the "Dark Night Project" (renamed "Varieties of Contemplative Experience") out of Brown. Some of my previous research while working on my first master's crossed into this sort of territory.

Thanks for the heads up. Think I remember this being talked about on a Sounds True podcast long time ago. Will definitely check it out. I would have a lot to say/contribute to such a topic. As well as addressing in an experiential way, that 'something' that gets filtered out.

An informal profile from 2014 of Willoughby Britton's "dark night" project is here:https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2014/06/the-dark-knight-of-the-souls/372766/ …

They've presented more or less the same general findings at Mind and Life in Boston ('14), San Diego ('16), and Phoenix ('18). Next stop Madison ('20) and potentially some published results down the line. Eagerly awaiting that day!

@bodhidave3 just read. LOTS to say about it. Particularly the banal 'ego defences' reply to his case. Trivially true & terribly lacking. Recognised his experience immediately. Something I was trained to address specifically in myself & others, with spiritual context to place it.

A Culadasa link @Yuanmeng_PAN posted had reply that gets at the issue, but reproached for being inappropriate ('my dharma is better than yours'), given the TMI situation. That aside it has a point regardless of tradition. There's detriment to displacing spirit from spiritual work
