I feel there's a motte-and-bailey going on somewhere with 1619… Motte: “Slavery had a big and lasting impact on America and its institutions” Bailey: “America is *founded on* slavery; this is the essence of the system and the primary thing to know to understand/interpret it”

Capitalism favors the means of production as held by individuals. Communism/socialism also favors the means of production, but as held by the state. Land was the means of production in the 17th century. Industry/data are the current means of production.

I'm always suspicious at "but that's not why [outgroup] criticize [thing with problematic elements]". It treats [outgroup] as a monolith, unlike the gorgeous mosaic of [ingroup]. I'd guess that some of [outgroup] share the concerns that some of [ingroup] find problematic.

To be fair to Noah, at least he avoided, "the REAL reason [outgroup]...," which often involves advanced ability to read the minds of people who are cognitively quite different

I thought a lot of the criticism of the 1619 Project focused on that essay. Wasn't that the main point historians and economists critical of 1619 were discussing? But maybe I haven't been reading some of the other critiques.
