There are basically two reasons for space colonization: 1) Spread the species throughout the cosmos so we're not vulnerable to a one-planet extinction event 2) Reset our kludgey institutions by starting afresh with a new society (of course, neither of these makes sense)

Thus, I recommend that we continue trying to work on our Earthly problems while simultaneously pushing technology forward, and then colonize space only when one or both of the aforementioned miracle technologies becomes available. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. (end)

"almost incomprehensibly better energy technology" has been the rule rather than the exception in the last several centuries of human history
-
Yes, it happened essentially once (animal/plant --> fossil fuels). The transition to solar will be an equally important transition but will affect sustainability rather than growth. For space we probably need fusion.

So by "space" you mean extrasolar. What about intra-system colonization?
-
No I'm including in-system

Nah, we can colonize our planetary neighborhood without either. Space elevator will be good enough because it cuts the energy requirements for bringing stuff to orbit to a tiny fraction of a percent of a rocket launch cost.

We should probably focus on mining over colonisation. Addresses Earth issues, and works out tech necessary for colonisation before we take that next big step. Automated AI is going to be our best friend out there, so best to work out the kinks before we need to heavily rely on it

We need space colonization to advance our energy technology. Solar arrays in orbit for example
-
Just put the solar panels up on balloons above the clouds

You left out 3: almost incomprehensibly advanced biotech. A combination of aggressive genetic modification and bionic integration could allow, eg, humans to do things like slow the metabolism down to a tiny fraction of the norm, enabling hibernation for long-term space travel
