If we're going to actually colonize space, and take advantage of either one of these opportunities, we will need at least one of the following: 1) uploading ourselves into self-replicating machines 2) almost incomprehensibly better energy technology, probably fusion-based

Thus, I recommend that we continue trying to work on our Earthly problems while simultaneously pushing technology forward, and then colonize space only when one or both of the aforementioned miracle technologies becomes available. Thank you for coming to my TED Talk. (end)

Because we do not yet have the tech required to sustain an off-world presence without constant resupply from Earth.

Why does the first one not make sense?
-
Nothing that could happen to Earth could make it less habitable than the Moon or Mars, except for it getting swallowed by the Sun in 1 billion years or hit by a truly immense asteroid (like big enough to turn the whole planet into lava)
