"Why the USSR fell apart" in a chart
I wonder if the spike in Russian spending late 90s is more due to their economy crashing or the wars in Chechnya.
When comparing military spending with Russia and China it's worth nothing just how much of our spending is on *personnel*. We don't have conscripts, and we pay our people pretty damn well, especially when you take into training, healthcare, and military families.
Interesting to see what percentage of the spend goes in salaries. I am assuming India can run a huge military because their people costs are fractional compared to US.
Genuinely curious how GDP calculations for the Soviet Union are performed. What do you use for prices?
This chart is more illuminating re: why the Soviet Union collapsed than entire college courses on the subject
How accurate is the China number? They don’t have public records like other OECD nations, right? Also, China’s number needs to be taken in the context of the fact that they steal our military secrets.
Wait. Is that for real with Russia? How?
