In other words, the "more cowbell" skit is a demonstration that gaslighting has benign uses. Simply insisting over and over that the skit contains an actual joke, until people question their sense of reality, is funny!

Is this satire? This post, I mean.

“I put my pants on just like the rest of you - one leg at a time... Except, when my pants are on, I make gold records.” That’s a funny line.

“Really explore the space”. Come on bro. Throttle back the meds. Get some sunlight. Eat a peach.
-
I still reference "explore the space." That's another point in favor of the perfect SNL sketch: strong quotability

This is a bad take. "More cowbell" is the joke, because it's the most insignificant and unmemorable part of the song, but Walken's character presents it as the most important element. That and Will Ferrel's physical humor.
-
What’s also funny about it is that it totally changes how you listen the song so the cowbell actually becomes memorable.
-
And not necessarily in a good way.
-
I think they mixed it louder when they remastered it for digital.
-
To be honest I’ve never heard the cowbell in that song, it sounds to me like he’s hitting a hollow piece of wood. But I’m not a drummer either.

-
A wood block can sound similar to a cowbell, especially if you hold the "bell" part, and sort of mute the ring. Wood blocks generally have a higher note, though.
-
Interesting!
, knowing that... more cowbell!

The joke is that the cowbell is so prominent in the song Don’t Fear the Reaper that there must have been an eccentric producer responsible for the choice and wow what would that have been like
-
also, whereas you often hear cowbell as part of a drum kit or percussion kit, usually in a syncopated rhythm, This cowbell is on the downbeat and repeats endlessly, which means it had its own dedicated musician (or track), and no musicianship.
-
right, and it's not funny at all if someone made a metronome track with a cowbell, decided it sounded good, and left it in. also not funny to explain the joke to econtwitter but here we are
-
I didn’t know that was even feasible in 1976. it would be amusing if the cowbell turned out to be a bit of unheralded historic technical wizardry.
-
They had echo devices for guitar that would play on an endless loop back then, you'd play a bar or two and those bars would be repeated endlessly. Cowbell wouldn't have been hard.
-
Overdubbing and multitrack tape is nearly as old as monotrack tape.
-
This was a live device.
