So Google, FB, etc have been aided by the absence of regulatory barriers in the US on data privacy and by the opposite, the GDPR in the E.U.? That’s a real heads I win, tails you lose. Data privacy regimes outside US increasingly modeling on GDPR so something has to give.

You can build in some. Progressive fines for violations is probably useful. Cutoffs for size may be necessary but create some bizarre incentives at the margin. But legal battles are inherently costly.

It would be good to have some research to back up that statement. Perhaps I missed it, but the linked article doesn't show that. It shows a significant drop in online trackers. Which is kinda the point of online privacy.

My usual conversation starter with people whose job it is to advocate for the GDPR has been “this clearly has many salutary effects but won’t it just make it impossible for new companies to compete in social media, adtech, etc?” I’ve never gotten a serious answer.
