You will notice that I almost never attempt this style.

I really like "literary" academic writing and journalism when I think it works and I hate it when I think it doesn't, but it doesn't map on to agree / disagree. I dislike Foucault, but he had great prose. American academics who try to write like him can't pull it off.

I would have agreed in the past, but when I bring up basic issues from science or policy (in plain English) that someone doesn't like - I get accused of plamas (Irish word, basically means "flowery schlock") or worse, "having notions" (roughly means speaking above my station).
-
I've spent enough time on the debate circuit to know all too well that there's a difference between sweet sounding sophistry and prose designed to enhance the substance of the argument instead of hiding it. I've found that most people can too - if they actually think about an
-
argument critically. Even just prompting someone with a couple questions over a drink can make people seriously change their opinions on speakers - the problem is many people are encouraged NOT to think critically. In which case, the style matters a lot less than affiliation.

Caveat There is such a thing as just terrible flowery language. If you don't know how to use a style effectively, don't use it. No shame in knowing one's limits. Also, not every style of writing/speaking is appropriate for every topic. There have definitely been some bad examples

I can't tell if you're subtweeting anyone in particular with this, but I think I agree...?

But I’m writing a paper on the Vestment Clause right now and I’m arguing that the framers would be HORRIFIED to see what trump is doing with their vague Article II
