1/You know what's more productive than calling Trump a Nazi? Trying to imagine the worst that Trump might conceivably do to this country. I thought about this a bit after the election, and here was my conclusion.

To be fair, my thread was not (yet!!) as prophetic as people are saying, since A) I was talking about a push for a Constitutional amendment, and B) Trump repeatedly talked about ending birthright citizenship during his campaign...

Aside from Trump's intent, why is this bad as a policy ? The whole of Europe has moved away from birthright citizenship in the last one generation or so.

Because it’s a right, not a policy. And it’s the American way.

It is, indeed. But ways can be changed. US itself has on several occasions. This used to be the British way until UK changed it in 1983. My question is why is this better than any other way ?

Because otherwise you develop a class of people with few granted rights, easily taken advantage of. This is wrong. There are inalienable rights, and birthright citizenship protects them. I have very little interest in discussing if this is more “efficient”.

...but it is more efficient since it preserves the American idea of meritocracy, ie that it shouldn’t really matter who your parents were, that everyone can get a fair shot. This encourages the best to contribute their best instead of being held back just because of their parents

The ideal of America has always been (Although VERY imperfect at first) the triumph of rights and freedoms for everyone regardless of their parents, a rejection of the caste-like system of European aristocracies. The 14th Amendment solidified this ideal.

all joking aside, this is typical, bad salesman strategy: do whatever it takes to juice sales today, i.e. turnout the white supremacy vote, and let someone else worry about the costs/bottom line, i.e. increased minority turnout.
