1) the idea that Republicans and Democrats are equally guilty of this is absurd. 2) it also completely ignores the benefits of Democrats being more responsive to minority voters: that they are more likely to meet the needs of those voters.

There is no symmetric benefit to the Republicans pivoting toward white people; they are the advantaged group in society. The Civil Rights was ONLY possible because black voters and activists, at great personal risk, demanded they be represented.

You may reasonably believe that more race-neutral political rhetoric is more effective and good in the long run. But you need to recognize that asymmetry. One party represents the downtrodden, the other the advantaged. This country has never just given black People equality.

It’s only been available to them when they’ve fought like hell. I know you care about racial inequality. So you should be much much much more careful before you suggest that responsiveness to minority voters is the same as catering to white resentment.

The problem with Dems isn't responsiveness to minority voters; that's good. It's believing - and loudly saying - that demographic change will propel them to inevitable victory. Which some Dem strategists have done (e.g. Judis and Teixeira).

I see. I don’t think that comes off clearly in your tweets. It sounds as if it is the messaging to minority voters is the problem. I certainly agree that there is nothing inevitable there.

I should have been more clear about what role I thought Dems have played. It's the demographic triumphalism that's the problem, not minority voter outreach.

Gotcha. Agreed then haha. European immigrants used to be solid Democrat voters too...

Gonna leave up the more confrontational tweets just cuz I think those points bear repeating as we move farther and farther from the Civil Rights Movement victories

No worries! They will serve as a useful lead-in for any other people who thought I was criticizing Dems for catering to the needs of minority voters! :-)
