When Republicans started to believe in racial bloc voting - when they stopped believing that nonwhite people could ever be persuaded to vote Republican - they started to see immigration as an invasion. This explains why immigration is now at the center of partisan conflict.https://twitter.com/SenatorBrakey/status/1056540826317283328 …

As long as both parties see elections in terms of racial bloc voting - where the only way to win is to increase turnout among your own racial blocs or suppress turnout by the other party's racial blocs - American politics will not improve, and the country will decline. (end)

I talked to two Republican retirees yesterday who stopped by the Democrat's information table outside an early voting location who told us that they'd voted GOP their whole lives but were voting straight ticket Dem because baby jails convinced them the GOP had to be stopped.

(B) And look to California for a blueprint.

Also the bad equilibrium could be quite stable. Many democracies in or world are ethnic bloc democracies. The US was an exception, perhaps not as robust an exception as we thought.
-
What are some examples?
-
Ghana, Kenya, Latvia, Lebanon.
-
Hmm. Those are all poor countries, so I'm not too worried. How about Canada?
-
I recognize that they are poor countries and I see why you'd think that's a reason to dismiss, but I'm not so convinced that's decisive. As relative power declines and diversity rises, who is to say we don't retreat to blocs? That's certainly been the trend.

I like the optimism that we aren't going to ride the 'bad equilibrium' all the way to the bottom. I don't share it, but I like it.

Not sure how it's a dichotomy, it's precisely the exodus of upper-middle class college-educated whites from the GOP that makes economic populism more likely, which could attract more black and hispanic voters per polling on "smaller govt." support uniquely higher among whites.

GOP will be out for at least a gen. Dem party will grow and then split. Then we will be back to two parties.

This played out in CA politics in 1990s, when intra GOP politics were won by nativists. Until early 1990s, GOP was at least somewhat comp. By 2000, they had abs no chance statewide. 1/
-
I tend to suspect this was the conseq of gerrymandering working the way it is supposed to work: pack in voters for the losing side in as few districts as poss. So there were very few GOP elected officials, but they were usually very safe. 2/
-
So no need to be creative and build new coalitions, and plenty of incentives to appeal to their core supporters in home districts only. But, in so doing, their party becomes irrelevant statewide. 3/

A is your winner. Especially with Trump and Kavanaugh encouraging women to ditch the GOP. Trumpism won't kill the party, but enough Dem White Houses and shaky GOP Congressional majorities and they'll have to build a new coalition.
