South Korea was actually poorer than North Korea for a few years after the war. It also got destroyed. Then it recovered and became rich. North Korea...did not.

I'd argue that the key factors in South Korea's recovery were the technology from Japan, tons of foreign aid, and decent education, something the North never had. There is nothing socialist about not having technology, foreign aid, and decent education.

That one country recovered from war does not mean the war can't be the reason for another country's demise. North Korea certainly has one of the worst governments ever, and they are responsible for the state of the country, but that government itself is the product of the war.
