They increase the demand for higher skilled, higher paid blue collar workers to do maintenance, setup, etc.

And sometimes they also increase demand for lower skilled work as well.
-
I’ve seen marketing material for industrial painting robots that claim they allow the use of lower skilled workers, and of course power looms enabled low skilled workers to produce vast amounts by tending multiple machines (to the chagrine of skilled loom weaver luddites).
-
True. The most advanced looms available require skilled weavers and loom mechanics - just not a lot of them. Their skill level is much higher than those doing assembly, for example. (Was Controller of a plant that had both assembly and weaving).
-
But they don’t have to babysit individual machines or manually control tension, etc. Loom monitoring systems, waterjet technology, etc., have made a world of difference.

But do they make it safer?
-
In most factories, yes, provided people follow proper lock-out, tag-out procedures when doing maintenance, etc.

If you provide glasses to an office of myopic employees and double their productivity, thereby only needing half of them, did the glasses take the jobs of the other half?

In fact the only way to increase economic output per person is with increased efficiency, such as augmenting human work with robotics.
