Love this. When I read the original story, it was clear they were trying to enter Mexico, traveingl on was secondary. This is obviously a crisis and if we didn't have such a reactionary idiot as POTUS we could probably work with our neighbor to find a solution.

I don’t think that’s the case. “Mexico is the worst destination that us Central Americans can have. It is the country where we suffer the greatest xenophobia, it is the country where they kill us and kidnap us. Mexico is the most frightening destination.”https://twitter.com/warkentin/status/1051823055679475712?s=21 …

The fact that there is widespread discrimination against Central Americans in Mexico, sometimes to horrifying extents, rarely makes it to the US press.
-
This is bullshit. My neighbor is from Nicaragua and nobody really cares.
-
Tell your neighbor to translate the replies to the tweet I quoted above. I don’t think that looks like people simply not caring. There’s also, like, this: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_San_Fernando_massacre …

I live in Veracruz. Narcos are brutal with everyone. I'm talking about normal people.

They also by and large would like to come back when things get less evil.

What I don't get is how people don't try on the situation for themselves. Imagine that your husband just got murdered by a death squad. Wouldnt you say to yourself, well, I gotta at least get out of town

There's a well known trend of immigrants doing well in a richer country with the intent of returning. If they stay, they overwhelmingly become American in every way. If they leave, we get the benefits of their productive life and a legion of ambassadors.

Oh, they've understood that from the start. It's just that they needed to lie for the midterm elections, and since 2016 lying has come more easily to them than ever.

It’s a testament to how much Mexico has improved compared to its Central American peers.

I recall that from working in Guatemala - Mexico as the arrogant, rich, fat neighbor to the north.

And people should really learn those countries are in such bad shape mainly due to the legacy of US policies during the Cold War.

Many illegally present foreigners are South Americans who used Mexico as a pathway. What evidence do you have to suggest that their final destination is not U.S.A.?
