New York City is almost as polite as Tokyo, almost as safe as Tokyo, and almost as convenient as Tokyo. How amazing is that.

Obviously it depends on the person, but in general I'd say NYC is a bit better if you're under 30, while Tokyo is a lot better if you're over 40.

It's more about the scrap-and-build policy, which is somewhat due to the need to improve earthquake safety as technology improves.

Ah the threat of future razing. I do appreciate the cultural norm against real estate as investment though, which may be related.

New York’s shabbiness is charming, IMO. It’s like wabi-sabi. One of my favorite things about the city.

Interestingly, as a New Yorker thats one thing that attracts me to LA - there’s a shambolic and lawless sense to the sprawl, a sense that’s been lost (somewhat) in the 20 years I’ve been here
