However, NYC is much louder than Tokyo, much shabbier-looking than Tokyo, much dirtier than Tokyo, slightly more crowded than Tokyo, and somewhat more expensive than Tokyo.

Obviously it depends on the person, but in general I'd say NYC is a bit better if you're under 30, while Tokyo is a lot better if you're over 40.

Safe?? What?
-
Take JMZ line and report back please. Preferably late at night.
-
I used to do that every day!
-
You did it within Manhattan, sounds like. As did I.

Out to Brooklyn.

New York city murder rate is about 3/100k, Tokyo's is .3/100k. Tokio is much, much safer.
-
In this case, differences matter, not ratios. You wouldn't, for example, notice the difference between a 0.3 murder rate and a 0.003 murder rate, even though that's a two order of magnitude difference.
-
Especially if you drill down to just Manhattan. At this point there isn't one neighborhood in 'the city' that I would feel unsafe in. Seems you're arguing with people who don't spend time in NYC
-
Then it's better to campare Manhattan to a prefecture of Tokyo. Tokyo is miles ahead of NY in terms of service, facilities, infrastructure.

Tokyo subways are waaaaay better
-
Meh. More of a JR fan myself.
-
Japanese railfans tell me JR is less reliable than the private railroads - delays propagate more easily on such a complex system.
-
In Tokyo, though, they run so many trains that it doesn't matter. In Osaka, subway rules.

I'll bet NYC is much more interesting though.

Hard to compare...
-
True. More diversity in NYC though for sure.
