5/Assassinations, of course, are in addition to politically flavored mass shooting incidents. Since 2015 we've had: Dylann Roof: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charleston_church_shooting … Omar Mateen: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orlando_nightclub_shooting … Micah Johnson: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_shooting_of_Dallas_police_officers … Farook and Malik: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2015_San_Bernardino_attack …

Seems like the 70s created the 80s. Not the best time for the US. Reagan had 2 assassination attempts, right?

Probably when you get tired of politicizing everything, twisting each others words and forcing people to pick sides. If I were to believe American social media, the U.S. is made of 50% Soros paid shills and 50% Russian bots and about to have a civil war around.. next Wednesday.

I think the Republicans are all in on a Cold Civil War. I think they have been slowly building up to this for a generation, and Mitch McTurtle ultimately kicked it off with the Garland fiasco. The Republicans are not giving up power without extracting a heavy toll on Democracy.

Someone that stands up to their own party/side but also has the standing/respect to make them listen. Someone reaching deep and hard across the aisle.

Elections can end the cycle The current political tribe is too weak to maintain or create a sphere for civil discourse
-
One of America’s superpowers is the ability to create/sustain/protect a free market of ideas which allows for creative & effective solutions The downward trajectory of the current political class speaks to a monoculture of poor ideas Elections correct poor political leadershippic.twitter.com/fRf0TEYliW

Great thread. For a hopeful answer to your last q, see the rise/fall of animal rights terrorism in the UK 2001-06. Two factors ended their violent campaign: 1. A new group, "Pro-Test", created a place for sane majority to reject them. 2. They went too far and excited revulsion.
-
Forgive Wikipedia link but not actually a bad summary up top https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pro-Test

And this was the case that made most people go, "Oh wow, you're not in this for the animals, you're really just assholes." http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/staffordshire/4762481.stm …

It's hard to overstate how unlikely the demise of ALF and related groups looked as late as 2006. They really looked set to destroy and harass clinics, scientists, etc, do violence with impunity, etc. Then suddenly they were nowhere to be seen and never came back.

I used to think they ended when somebody did something SO BAD that everyone sobered up and got together. But if killing 20 kids isn't bad enough then I guess nothing is bad enough. So - an attack by China or NK, maybe.

The applied tactics show that civil war is a straegic goal of some players. Putin laughs and laughs.

They end either by going hot, or when one side has enough and stomps the other conclusively into the dirt. Given who currently controls the levers of power neither sounds very appealing
