I get what you mean, but it seems strange to view the report as starting a conversation when 1) people were already talking about socialism anyway and 2) no one takes the report seriously because it is, as you say, silly.

I myself have not read it so I cant comment on the validity of it. I wonder how many of your followers bashing it have read it in its entirety as well?

People see socialism and pull the fire alarm.

But talking about USSR and Venezuela is not most helpful thing for evaluating what is working and not working in the here and now. Healthcare is huge issue for Americans and freaking 18 percent of our GDP, economists should be all in on that, not arguing over 40 years ago.

I recently finished Sylvia Nassar’s book, Grand Pursuit. It’s all about the big ideas.

Yeah, but wouldn't it be nice to talk about NEW big ideas rather than what was all the rage in 1952?

But do you like the report or do you like the consequences of it having been written?

Conversely, it should be discussed which parts of GDP actually enhances life satisfaction (even if that can be different between people and cultures). I would much rather go around on a 300$ bike and be healthy than pay 300$+ for a car + 30$+ for gym
-
Problem is that there's a lot of double counting with GDP. For instance a big house is +, a car to get to the house is +, the gym you drive to is + and the medicine we use to treat lifestyle disease is +. Yet that lifestyle is not necessarily better than walking/biking in a city

The opportunity costs of wholly worker owned and controlled companies?

The opportunity cost to the shareholder class.

Maybe it got dropped in the ´80s. But in wich way does it help to get back into the ´50s in terms of quality? As if it would not be known that for example the US health care system is one of the worst in effectivity within developed countries. Just strange.

Talking about “big ideas” like an idiot isn’t helping anyone, just muddies the waters
