That said, I do like Booker's Medicare X plan a lot. Better than "Medicare for All".

How is Bernie getting it wrong?
-
He's not, because he's not trying to be a wonk!

What’s the wonk test?
-
Probably the same test that said Obamacare exchanges would be better policy than the fiscally irresponsible Medicaid expansions. It ended up that Medicaid was much more politically popular however
-
Why do you think that is?
-
Voters aren't wonks and they don't listen to experts.
-
Why is Medicare considered less of a policy than the exchanges?
-
Keep in mind Medicare and Medicaid are different.

What?
@realBenShapero is wrong that this creates an effective marginal tax rate over 100%. More like 10%. Extra 6k income reduces benefit only $500.pic.twitter.com/VKJnmZM8ra
-
I said it could, not that it would. It's still too complicated and doesn't do anything to lower costs.
-
Fine. But I agree that more hyper means-tested crap like this will just add to a confusing morass of programs for working class people.
-
And I think one way this does create messed up cliffs of bad incentives is marriage. I already know people who avoid marriage to ensure eligibility for govt benefits. This would supercharge that for poor parents.
-
Relatedly, that's why my preferred income tax would be calculated by an integral. No brackets, still progressive.
-
Because so many people misunderstand brackets by not realizing they only refer to marginal income in the next bracket, so they incorrectly belief that they create income cliffs? That was a common misconception when I taught undergrad microeconomics.
-
I know it's different, but eliminating brackets is still worth it because they suck and annoy everyone trying to do a calculation.
-
I thought the benefit was making calculation easy with discrete values. "Make 100k? That's in the 25% bracket of 80-165k, so your tax burden is 12k on your first 80k plus 25% of the remainder, so another 5k, which makes 17k altogether".
