I always though AA would be 90 slots determined just on merit and then the last 10 on merit within a subgroup that needed more representation. Not sabotaging the first 90 slots.

Too much symbol, not enough math; too much idealism, not enough organization of thought.

I smell opportunity! Let’s open an elite Asian oriented university for clever Asians!
-
It's called Caltech
-
Also UC - Berkeley
-
someone should do this as a for-profit university. could be very profitable
-
I know right? Sweep away all the legacy university bullshit too.

My relative who is half Jewish half South Asian frequently jokes about moving her kids to Montana to increase their college admissions chances.

He could claim to be Latino and be done with it.

Raw scores do not convey full magnitude of this discrimination. 1310 is top 8.5% of students, while 1380 is top 4.5%, which means an Asian student has to be twice as good as a white student to be considered acceptable material by Harvard.https://twitter.com/Yascha_Mounk/status/1055101714934718469 …

Could be true if the 91st percentile is half as "good" as 95th. Wait... but why are we presuming that again?
-
They're not. I'm making that interpretation. i.e. they have set the bar so that if student scores were randomly assigned, an Asian student would have half as much chance of being invited as a white student would.

These scores are so low (by Harvard standards), it seems more like an attempt to lower their admissions rate for rankings.

Bigger question: there are about 3,000 4-year degree granting institutions in the US. Why are we constantly so preoccupied with this *one*? They have a powerful alumni network, but perhaps the disproportionate value we place on the Harvard brand reflects a market problem.

I thought it was supposed to be OK to selectively encourage people to apply as long as you didn't discriminate during selection? (not that this describes Harvard) This is the usual remedy suggested for increasing the number of women in tech.

Given their discriminatory admissions policy, they're doing the right thing. They shouldn't encourage Asians to apply who have no chance of getting in.
-
"no chance." extremely talented asian athlete in scarce country might have gotten in under the jock preference. or otherwise rarely talented kid--music, dance--might have won acceptance. harvard accepts singularly gifted applicants with relatively weaker academic credentials
