Brooks was arguing in NYT that last century it was big v small govt and now it’s identity politics v the cohesive identity of America. It seems the fight is really people who need power to achieve social good and the people who want power because power. Only one brings progress.

It was identity back then too, it's just that identity has relatively few policy implications

The Fourth Turning does a good job describing how these things move in cycles...and have done so for centuries.https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00N4EKS4W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_awdb_t1_uRg0BbJQGH5JG …

I find that these cyclic theories of history and politics tend to be overfitted to small samples, don't you?

Not sure...but considering they wrote the book in 1997, what they said about the 2000s and 2010s is pretty amazing.

I dunno. Fighting about the racial makeup of immigrants, stopping Muslims from entering the country, aligning ourselves with autocratics that mess with our elections, and withdrawing from internationalism seems to be new policy fights.

Oh sweetie those are not new

What do all of these look like when they are working and in service to all? Do we know what we really need and how it presents? My concern at 57 is Aging and care. Affordable housing, social security.

I am struck by the same observation. I came to the US in 1994 and the fault lines remain the same. Only movement has been on bay marriage. Otherwise conservatives remain where they were but liberals have moved left, especially on illegal immigration.
