Maybe the Cold Civil War will feel enough like a war that we won't need to do any actual shooting.https://twitter.com/DailyMail/status/1054509228969418752 …

As long as there's geographical migration & assortment by partisan ideology (folks moving to red states or blue states), will some kind of secession become inevitable?

I recently came across that term, Cold Civil War. I found it deeply disturbing largely because it seemed, maybe not a perfect metaphor, but to hold a lot of truth.

I would definitely prefer secession to bloodshed. Secession might be the best thing possible for the survival of America as we know it today, if we are talking on a 100+ year time scale.

Your "nope" is addressing the current practicality, whereas my tweet was talking about long-term sustainability. To answer your question anyway, I would say the current most likely secession candidate would be a progressive state in California, from ~Oakland on South.

I'm not going to pretend to know the specifics, though. There are a number of obvious threats to the United States, as well as unknown threats. Splitting into smaller states with different governmental policies may be the best defense against an uncertain future.

You know what else would be a good defense against an uncertain future? A technology that lets you create invincible force fields. You know why I don't call for that or spend much time thinking about it? Because it's a fantasy.

Noah, you are almost definitely right. Odds of an actual breakup are super low. But impossible?

So the future is _so_ uncertain that trying to avoid catastrophe is as futile as waiting for unicorns to save us. But also you're completely certain that the United States will continue with its exact same borders until it ceases to exist?

Secession wouldn't avoid a catastrophe, it would cause one. And in fact would be one.

History doesn't show a good record of people being able to predict the causes of catastrophe, and I'm not convinced you're the exception.

Sure. $100 that the next American secession will successfully last for at least 5 years and will happen without major military conflict.
