Assuming one is in favor of keeping affirmative action, as you are, I think it’s important to distinguish between descendants of slaves and African immigrants, as the data suggest we may already disproportionately benefit from AA. Might be tricky to implement, but even so.

He states that the point is to apply a form of conciliatory affirmative action (johnsons orig purpose) to the two groups who have been the victims of egregious government sanctioned repression. He includes a class based approach to supply opportunities for poor groups left out

The issue is that many progressives believe that elite admissions should be distributed in proportions similar to the overall population, and that any disparity is a result of systemic bias. Asians and Jews are 5x overrepresented among top college applicants.

Some limited racial preference to assure diversity is one thing. But the ideology that seems to have taken hold is that a fair distribution is racially proportionate, which means caps on Asian enrollment or elimination of objective academic criteria at which Asians excel.

Super interesting. I never considered a two-pronged approach that would encompass class alongside the orig. intent of rectifying past actions. I would add an extension of affirmative action to someway include k-12 educ. or control for other ecological factors perpet. disparities

I'm guessing the biggest beneficiaries of the current affirmative action system are white women since there are more of them on the margin than other URM so this would be a significant change (even though most of the media's coverage is about AA's)

Thank you for not disregarding all the poor Asian Americans who get screwed over by the current system.pic.twitter.com/yLoQ4bP33x

1) Why is the pragmatic blurring issue any less of a concern for American Indian and Af Am? (Obviously E Warren is a classic eg, but I’ve seen in own family). 2) what are sunsetting criteria and plan (dubious of any social policy making group distinctions wo sunsetting plan)?

College admission rates are important, but the key is entry level. While there are admirable exceptions, it is difficult to make up for deficient K-6. The same goes for job entry level. Research has shown that the principle applies to most endeavors requiring advanced skills.

This might be my ignorance on elite schools admission processes, but what about class only Aff Action with a "Rooney Rule" that requires you to interview/include specific groups of marginalized candidates in the admissions process?
