If you want great historical insight on how fear of riots, cultural change, and the breakdown of social order can polarize and paralyze the country, read "Nixonland":https://www.amazon.com/Nixonland-Rise-President-Fracturing-America/dp/074324303X …

Ever heard of the “Hard Hat Riot” during Vietnam? Unionized NYC construction workers descended on an anti-war protest and severely beat scores of protesters. The police appear to have been ineffective at the task of protecting protesters. Nixon made the union head Sec. of Labor.

Yup. I remember the National Guard murdering peaceful protesters on an American campus. There was a feeling that the lid was going to blow off American society.

In the 60s we didn’t have phones and a million cat gifs to keep us mostly preoccupied and docile

I've heard it argued that Trump is the death throws off Nixon's cultural movement. I want to believe this.

reading Hofstadter in 'The Paranoid Style in American Politics' analysing the Goldwater campaign also echos like a thunder
-
Trump is probably more of a Barry Goldwater than a Nixon wiedergänger -
Barry Goldwater was a principled, libertarianish, small-government conservative. Trump is a populist, big-government opportunist who has no princples at all. Total opposites.
-
Goldwater fixated on the southern strategy with a populist campaign basis and being at odds with the Republican establishment.

Social order chaos obs true, but trump = more impulsive & less restrained—utterly lacking self-awareness & mostly devoid of close experienced advisors willing 2 risk speaking truth 2 insane power. Id run amok. Plus Nixon had a life in politics. trump?... https://www.newyorker.com/news/swamp-chronicles/is-fraud-part-of-the-trump-organizations-business-model …

In the 60's there was the excuse of a badly behaving generation coming of age. Today it's happening *despite* a well-behaved generation coming of age.

If trump was as competent as Nixon i’d be more afraid. Great recommendation

Our cultural conflicts are not as severe, but our politics is far worse leaving me skeptical of our ability to deal successfully with even our less intense social problems.

Genuine question: did Nixon actively incite/endorse violence the same way that Trump has repeatedly?

Yeah, I keep thinking this about left and right freak outs these days. The left was fighting getting drafted to mass kill Vietnamese and getting shot and killed at protests and right was reacting to actual cities burning and things blowing up.
