1/With people freaking out about the Honduran migrant caravan now forcing its way through Mexico, I figured it might be time for a thread about Central American immigration.https://www.bloomberg.com/news/photo-essays/2018-10-21/migrant-caravan-continues-toward-u-s-even-as-trump-threatens-military-intervention …

3/First, some useful background. MEXICAN immigration to the United States collapsed a decade ago. Since then, there has been a decrease in the Mexican-born population living in America of about 500,000.pic.twitter.com/3a7BAfzxV1

Of the ~6M Mexicans living illegally in the US in '14, 78% had been here 10+ years, 93% had been here 5+ years, so I don't see the "collapse" that you do.

But that's the whole damn point. They came a long time ago, not recently.

You see Mexican "immigration" as when they cross the border; I think legal status is also included in "immigration". As such, I still see them in the process, where you see them as done. We're talking diff languages, which was my damn point.

I think you're misrepresenting the case if you're ignoring that once folks get here, they try to stay permanently. Folks aren't just concerned about the transit, they're concerned about once they're here. A drop in the flow doesn't end the immigration issue of the ~6M here.

What do you wanna do? Send ICE into everyone's house to check their papers? Are you so pissed off about those 6 million Mexicans living here that you'd turn our country into a police state just to make them leave?? Where are your priorities?!

You seem a lot angrier than me. Before we even talk about How we address something, we have to decide What we're addressing. If you and I and 100M+ voters cannot even agree if the What is an issue, then there's no point in talking How. The How is a distraction from the What.

I'm not angry at all, just teasing you. ;-)
