It is amazing to me how few persistent trolls you need to do this. Slashdot peak readers was roughly 2M per day, 10M per month. I would guess the hard core troll pop was 50-60 people.

Probably even smaller number in any given year... they came and went. Mostly.

I’m not sure it ends differently. The tumors came back no matter what we did, always hungering for the toxic fan boys applause. There was a lots of cool ideas to try if it wasn’t for all the EVERYTHING ELSE we had to do with no resources.

It took me many years to realize that running a site at our scale with only like 5 technical people was not normal.

Do Millennials recall much of the internet before ~'98? (I kinda ignored them and whatever they were all doing back then..)
-
Usenet was getting bad, but it wasn’t click funded so it was less Troll friendly.
-
Usenet seemed to be primarily funded by universities and large research/commercial orgs (though so did most of the internet back then). It wasn't troll friendly but neither did it seem troll-hostile; they were just a fact of the internet and being on it.
-
Although, I also more associate the phenomenon of trolling with more of the '98 - '04 period (and again in recent years, as it seems like people started discovering them all over again for the first time).

Tragedy of the commons type situation. Most people behave reasonably, but it only takes a small number to wreck the landscape.

It's not about the world being full of assholes but about there being just enough assholes to ruin things -- that is what the platforms need to engineer against. E.g., not every business spams but enough spam to mess up email.

I think good social networks can exist, just not in public. Small, invitational networks are of a much higher quality as the social costs are much higher and you have better control over who is allowed to join.

Only if you do what we do in the real world, which is sanction and police the assholes.
