It strikes me as a weird conseq of applying a measure suitable for individuals to nations. If US, Indonesia, etc were individuals, it'd make sense, but intranational dist issues complicate things.

We know natl avg fell in the developed world (w/ rel smaller pop, but more output) and still grew in the dev'ing world (w/ smaller output, but larger pop). So international converg. But we don't know about intranational inequality in either.
