OK that's enough facts for today! If you've seen all the facts and you still think the U.S. is being swamped by unprecedented waves of migrants...I just don't know what I can do for you. It may be time for you to move to Moldova, or pivot to video, or something. Bye. (end)

Oh, someone asked me to add more facts, about immigrants' impact on the budget. Here are the baseline estimates from the National Academy of Sciences (https://www.nap.edu/catalog/23550/the-economic-and-fiscal-consequences-of-immigration …).pic.twitter.com/XPpSWtwg7r

And someone else asked to see the recent immigration breakdown by education status. As you can see, low-skilled immigration has collapsed (due to the collapse and reversal of illegal immigration).pic.twitter.com/DYZWskRgsU

In fact, Gordon Hanson, Chen Liu, and Craig McIntosh have a whole paper about the collapse of low-skilled immigration in recent years: https://gps.ucsd.edu/_files/faculty/hanson/hanson_publication_immigration_risefall.pdf …

Percentage of pop doesn't tell everything.
-
I mean it's not unprecedented in number, percentage of pop, or any measure you care to name. It has declined according to all measures.
-
Here, you can see total change in immigrant population (raw numbers, not % of population) over 10-year periods. 2006-16 is the last column on the right. You can see how much immigration has slowed in the last decade. https://www.migrationpolicy.org/programs/data-hub/charts/immigrant-population-change-decade?width=900&height=850&iframe=true …
-
That’s a huge increase over the previous two decades. It doesn’t hurt to take a slow down for a while longer yet.
-
In fact, it's a huge *decrease* over the previous two decades. Look at the dang graph!

This chart has me confused. Pew Research is reporting that the percentage of foreign-born residents of the USA is due to pass the 1890 record of 14.8% in 2025.
-
That is not the number of migrants coming in
-
If we have a record high percentage of foreign born residents, why doesn't that mean a corresponding increase of migration?
-
Because most of them came years ago.

As u can see, no of illegal aliens(red) exploded from 1995-2003. Unparalleled in US history + Social trends take time to build up. The issue was maturing all this while, people were realising what hit &sure enuf it has raised a storm now
@delong@mattyglesias@Max_Fisher@lbyron -
And
@matthiasbaldwin has raised the right Q. Which was not answered! Is not the foreign population the highest ever? Any country can absorb & tolerate only so much alien content. And doesn't this foreign pop %age depend on migration?@tylercowen@krugman@willwilkinson@kjhealy -
It is disingenuous to point at the current migration rate which is low. The foreign pop was already touching record levels, & a witches brew kept brewing. Till 2016! The answer is right in front if we really want to look, but experts are looking all over
@costrike@UnlearningEcon -
I'd appreciate if you didn't tag me in on xenophobic jibber jabber in the future.
-
But there's a powerful social trend in play. All that we seem to be interested in is: Oh all the tens of millions of people who believe it are wrong. Misguided. No appreciation & understanding of what & why Sure one can take a normative position. But 1st must look it in eye Tx

I’ll agree that legal immigration does not need to be halved and can even be increased if you agree that illegal immigration should be decreased to as near to zero as we can. How about that?
