you know, the *policies,* the California Policy, which has reduced California to being the biggest state and biggest economy in the country
-
-
-
the implication is that people are leaving California because of the taxes/gay rights/brown people/poop in San Francisco/Indigenous Peoples Day, when in reality as far as I can tell, people are leaving California because there's not enough housing.
-
"Limousine liberal Dem policies stymie homebuilding" is a coherent objection, but almost no conservatives are able to stop there - it's always got to be about whatever their personal California pet peeve is
-
In California, Republicans are consistently bigger NIMBYs than Dems so it doesn't make a lot of sense to pin it on "liberals Dems"
-
Certainly plenty of NIMBYs are Republicans (Yorba Linda's obsession with blocking even modest apartments comes to mind) and Prop 13 has heled make this worse ...
-
... but CEQA and tons of other housing/building-related regulations, outdated city zoning rules, etc. is not something the GOP did. In Los Feliz/Silver Lake where I live, any time anyone wants to build anything, there's a horde of otherwise good liberals who turn out to decry it
-
There were people mad about this apartment project to replace a gas station at a busy intersection. A gas station! On the grounds that it would increase congestion, as if more cars would be pulling in and out of an apartment than a gas station.https://la.curbed.com/2017/3/17/14953734/los-feliz-western-franklin-new-building-development …
-
You're right, I guess I hadn't thought about who put all those regulations in place! If you look at state legislature voting records on Weiner's and other YIMBY measures, Dems are not great but Reps are far worse

I’m sure it has to do with all those places with sky-high rents where nobody wants to live anymore.

Is Beto trying to stop cities from building housing?

Because, as all serious political commentators know, federal legislators like US Senators are responsible for implementing the state legislation that would force some *totally not imagined people* to move from another state. Some real galaxy brain intellectuals right there.

Californians flee for Austin Portland Denver etc. largely because housing is cheaper. I am unaware of Beto endorsing higher rents but maybe you could make a (strained) case that his econ. policies would raise rents. Or you could be the National Review and just say whatever

whenever people are puzzled by a politician's over-the-top rock-star popularity from their base in first big campaign and base can't even really explain well - watch out, they are a special case politician, see: Obama, Trump, and sort of Bernie.

High taxes, regs that lead to higher costs of living, red tape / increased costs for small business.
