I really like the lead-crime hypothesis, & find the research compelling. However I asked Steven Pinker about a year ago, directly, & he still thought the hypothesis remains unsubstantiated. (I think he says there are too many causal steps unproven?) I was disappointed.

They keep doing large-N quasi-experimental studies that find a link, with a dizzying array of methodologies...
