To be honest, I think this is just the effect of Twitter. If you're on Twitter all the time - as every political commentator now is - it's easy to think that whiny, big-talking Twitter slacktivists are "the Dems". But what's happening out there on the ground?https://twitter.com/Popehat/status/1052953238981341184 …

This is another reason I think Twitter is so bad for society. It convinces intellectuals and commentators that practically everyone who's on their side is an extremist. Which makes them tolerate extremism out of a (false) feeling of necessity.

If you stay on Twitter too much (which we all do now), you start to think that the typical left-of-center person is some British wanker who quote-tweets "Imagine thinking this" to anyone who doesn't like the idea of "ending capitalism". But he is not typical.

A majority of Americans are not on Twitter. But *every* journalist, commentator, and intellectual *has* to be on Twitter. So every journalist, commentator, and intellectual comes face to face with big-talking slacktivist faux-extremists day in and day out. It's a problem!!

Online bubbles full of shouty faux-extremists are, in general, fine. The difference is that every journalist, commentator, and intellectual is essentially forced to exist in THIS bubble, because their jobs require it. Twitter is a dystopian technology. (end)

Compared with cable new, I find Twitter far more informative and thought-provoking. You dont have to follow everyone! You can curate. This holds for finance/econ twitter as well.

My one quibble with this thread is the first sentence of your last tweet. The Balkanization of the political internet started us on the path to hyper-polarization. Twitter just hastened our journey

"forced to exist in THIS bubble, because their jobs require it." You have just described a choice. I had a similar one regarding ethics of my employer. Once I realized it was a choice I was making, I knew what to do. Crawls back into dumpster, capitalism doesn't use force.

There seems to be a real pre-WWI vibe where people are looking at just the gains of capitalism but not seeing the rising instability that led to war. I feel in a few minutes you will be writing about how Esperanto will end ethnic conflicts.

I think the average journalist seems pretty untouched by the fact that institutions like family and center left parties are collapsing under risk neoliberalism. The general attitude seems to be everthing is pretty much fine and will soon return to normal.

That’s all true, but in 2016, clearly the Clinton camp was stuck in their bubble. They bot only did ot trust the fudmentals, or their ground reports, they actively shunned anything that didn’t fit the bubble’s thinking.
