To be honest, I think this is just the effect of Twitter. If you're on Twitter all the time - as every political commentator now is - it's easy to think that whiny, big-talking Twitter slacktivists are "the Dems". But what's happening out there on the ground?https://twitter.com/Popehat/status/1052953238981341184 …

This is another reason I think Twitter is so bad for society. It convinces intellectuals and commentators that practically everyone who's on their side is an extremist. Which makes them tolerate extremism out of a (false) feeling of necessity.

If you stay on Twitter too much (which we all do now), you start to think that the typical left-of-center person is some British wanker who quote-tweets "Imagine thinking this" to anyone who doesn't like the idea of "ending capitalism". But he is not typical.

A majority of Americans are not on Twitter. But *every* journalist, commentator, and intellectual *has* to be on Twitter. So every journalist, commentator, and intellectual comes face to face with big-talking slacktivist faux-extremists day in and day out. It's a problem!!

Online bubbles full of shouty faux-extremists are, in general, fine. The difference is that every journalist, commentator, and intellectual is essentially forced to exist in THIS bubble, because their jobs require it. Twitter is a dystopian technology. (end)

100% — and it’s not just about extremists being more likely to be on twitter, or being louder. Their ideas also spread further, everything else equal, in part because of hate-retweetshttps://twitter.com/altimor/status/1037874837698502657?s=21 …

The Internet's made the density of the memespace go up by several orders of magnitude by decoupling it from geography. Maybe that's the reason why memes / ideologies have become more aggressive: they're subject to greater evolutionary pressure than they ever were.

But the evolutionary pressure on the memes push them toward lowest-common-denominator because of the need for virality.

I don’t know if you need to be LCD to be viral, I’d say being outrageous is enough. But even if it was the case you had to be LCD, that makes the problem even worse! Makes everybody feel like their opponents have stupid, simple ideas

I think that it also makes people casually engage in extremism. I was commenting to a friend just the other day that even the ones who are on our side on Twitter are all simultaneously insulting, foul mouthed, and constantly on the attack. The rhetoric is always extreme here.

One of the trappings of a short character limit is that too many are inclined to use the most incendiary verbage even possible just for clicks and likes. Trump himself is the most extreme example of this, but it affects users across the entire political spectrum.

I think Twitter Reporting, where whatever hashtag or meme is going around is treated as A Big Deal™ has been utterly toxic to both journalism and discourse in society as a whole. My rule of thumb has become that if someone is reporting about tweets it's noise.

I've literally never seen a Dem ad propose impeachment other than that billionaire wasting money. They're all talking about healthcare, taxes and climate change here in SoCal.

I often see the countertrend. The Twitter bubble convinces intellectuals to overcompensate, as if barbarians are at the gate because of something a teenager said. But yes, getting outdoors is healthy.
