This is another reason I think Twitter is so bad for society. It convinces intellectuals and commentators that practically everyone who's on their side is an extremist. Which makes them tolerate extremism out of a (false) feeling of necessity.

If you stay on Twitter too much (which we all do now), you start to think that the typical left-of-center person is some British wanker who quote-tweets "Imagine thinking this" to anyone who doesn't like the idea of "ending capitalism". But he is not typical.

A majority of Americans are not on Twitter. But *every* journalist, commentator, and intellectual *has* to be on Twitter. So every journalist, commentator, and intellectual comes face to face with big-talking slacktivist faux-extremists day in and day out. It's a problem!!

Online bubbles full of shouty faux-extremists are, in general, fine. The difference is that every journalist, commentator, and intellectual is essentially forced to exist in THIS bubble, because their jobs require it. Twitter is a dystopian technology. (end)

I interpreted "Dems" in this meme to mean Democrats you meet going about your day, at faculty meetings. Or in-laws who listen to NPR too much.

(since I am tweeting this anonymously at a Bloomberg columnist instead of finishing my book chapter on public debt at the time of the French Revolution I suppose I am part of the problem.)

Finish your book! ;-)

This may be a fair criticism, though I think you'd have to expand to include other media as well.

Celebritized talking heads on impeachment are easier and better ratings than Dem GOTV phonebanking house parties where normal everyday people are dialing deep red districts while munching on snacks from Costco.

As a Field Organizer ("on the ground") I can say that the level of volunteer engagement we have seen is wayyyy lower than one would expect or hope given the current state of things. Other FOs around the country have said the same.
-
sorry you're having that experience; certainly not the case in Virginia.

This is an especially good point since smart Dem campaigns seem to prefer keeping aggressive GOTV efforts quiet, so as not to draw the backlash ire of the other side.
-
Right, the Dem GOTV efforts get loudly framed as cheating in some way by the GOP and then credulously reported in media as "GOP says Democrats are cheating", while GOP's longstanding efforts to keep eligible people from voting is just "politics"

Yeah, I just retweeted this because its damn funny, but very good friends of mine (sadly, unlike me) are working like dogs on the fundamentals. And they aren't alone by any stretch. The "ground" looks a lot different than twitter.

I’ve been helping out the Beto team since the early summer. I spend hours on the the phone with voters in Texas. Beto is going to win.

We all have our corner. From where I sit it’s thousands of moms who are more likely to do “craftivism” than melees. It’s the Republican Party that’s lost their damn minds and forced us into politics so our kids will have a decent country to grow up in.

Twitter in general distorts the shape of discourse to high volume / loud / outlandish sources. It's also very fun to poke at dems.
