In a city of 8.6 million people, in a country flooded with guns, this is pretty incredible. New York is getting something very, very right.https://twitter.com/patrick_sharkey/status/1052542751911407616 …

All, if you're interested in this debate, FYI: I started a website, FB group and small organization dedicated to studying gun violence in Ch back when I was working at UC. I could not *believe* the amount of violent threats that started pouring into my inbox. 1/
-
I got dozens of threats from people. I wouldn't say that any of them were really credible. I didn't call the police or anything, but there were people on Facebook who didn't even bother to hide their identity who would threaten violence.
-
I mean, why did you get threats? Who were the threat-makers and why did they care?
-
I used FB ads to grow the group. I suppose that they saw them and told me what to do with my little advocacy group. Purely anecdotally: most were gun nuts Several "liked" gun manufacturers, posed with guns, etc (the ones who didn't hide their identities.)

The most recent ReplyAll includes inside reports of the NYC police under-reporting crime during this period https://www.gimletmedia.com/reply-all/127-the-crime-machine-part-i … Hopefully the recent numbers are accurate

Damn hard to underreport murder.
-
Does manslaughter/self-defense count in murder statistic? Examples in podcast were not deaths now that I think of it though.

I'm from Chicago. The "look at Chicago!" gun rights defense is incredibly tiresome, yet we're negating the progress made in New York. Chicago violence involves so many issues. I would say that Chicago has a gang, policing and *geography* problem first, and a gun problem second.

I want to know the role an aging population plays in this. It probably doesn’t matter for NY (or maybe it does I don’t really know) but it has been nagging me for years now, how much has the violent crime drop been connected with aging population, if at all.

Geography, as in, my former home is surrounded by states with some of the laxest gun policies in the country. People get caught coming back from Indiana with trucks filled with guns from straw purchasers.

New York is doing some good work. Should study what they are doing and replicate it.
