Fortunately, literally everyone who ever uses the word "capitalism" on the internet has their own particular creative ad hoc definition of it, though the more stupid, tedious and jejune will also insist that theirs is the one true Platonic vision of capitalism.

What about sticking with private ownership of the means of production as a base definition? Isn't the price mechanism the defining characteristic of a market economy? I don't see how private ownership of capital is a necessary condition here, but I am open to being educated.

I mean, capitalism has existed since about 1750 or so. Markets have been around for millennia. I don't know how you can confuse these two concepts so easily.

Not really; if you only have small business, then by definition you have basically ended it. The Petit Bourgeois shopkeeper, and yeoman farmer are not a capitalists.
