People have asked me to show the data that African fertility is NOT high compared to its income. This is real GDP per capita vs total fertility rate by region, World Bank data. I've marked where unusually high/low TFR countries should fall. pic.twitter.com/4w0nKBzXfd

My take on the "African fertility" debate is that it doesn't matter. All the things that lower fertility are things that are also good for other reasons - poverty reduction, women's education, lower child mortality. Thus, there should be no policy debate here.

Lyman got mad at some people for worrying about overpopulation in Africa.

Bill Gates doesn't think so. Hence why we're having this idiotic conversation.

If worrying about overpopulation gets Bill Gates to pour his money into reducing disease and providing education for women, I say, let him worry!

I don't think that's quite right tho? Worrying about poverty gets him to do those things. To the extent he *actually* worries about overpopulation, he would slacken on disease aid and pour money into fertility suppression.

Reducing child mortality is a quick way to lower fertility, so maybe not. Either way, who cares? He seems to be spending his money doing good things for Africans, and there's no real policy debate here.
