I mean, he's right, but who stirred up the "Africans are having too many kids" crew?
Ezra Klein.
Shit, really?! Ugh. Okay. thanks.
It's such a non-debate. No one - or at least, no one outside Africa - should be thinking or worrying about this...
Much of Africa is poor. Poor people have more kids. Poverty also sucks. We should work on helping poor people. At this level of abstraction, none of this is complicated. I swear we just went over this last year. Didn't Bill Gates go over this last year?!
Yeah. Pointless debate.
To be clear, the Bill Gates who wrote this in February 2018 is worried about overpopulation?! (now that I read it again, Melinda is the one answering... Maybe he should defer to her on this issue)pic.twitter.com/llcukDwjI0
Overpopulation is overrated
Bill Gates doesn't think so. Hence why we're having this idiotic conversation.
If worrying about overpopulation gets Bill Gates to pour his money into reducing disease and providing education for women, I say, let him worry!
I don't think that's quite right tho? Worrying about poverty gets him to do those things. To the extent he *actually* worries about overpopulation, he would slacken on disease aid and pour money into fertility suppression.
Reducing child mortality is a quick way to lower fertility, so maybe not. Either way, who cares? He seems to be spending his money doing good things for Africans, and there's no real policy debate here.
