By endorsing a policy of confiscating land from rich landlords (with minimal compensation) and distributing it to poor farmers, Ladejinsky saved much of East Asia from communism. This story, I think, has some lessons for the modern day.

Didn't work too well in South Vietnam, eh?
-
Yep. It never really went through. Could have saved South Vietnam from communism if implemented promptly. Hell, could probably have persuaded North Vietnam to stay on our side.
-
The Indochinese wars were propelled by anti-colonialism and to achieve self determination. One economic theory or another wasn't going to reverse that if it was imposed by a foreign power.
-
I mean, we did it in Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea.
-
Japan's resistance was already broken. The Kuomintang was a proponent of georgism early on yet they lost the mainland to the communists. Korea was somewhat similar, but the south not going communist had more to do with Rhee massacring ~200,000 leftists prior to the war
-
But the South did go communist...the Viet Cong had majority support.
-
That was meant for S. Korea. Rhee (maybe) prevented a Viet Cong equivalent but wound up giving N. Korea a reason to invade seeing as how he was murdering hundreds of thousands of fellow Koreans. It isn't the best comp to Indochina but it's closer than the other two.

Is this neoliberalism?
-
It is now

Don't have any suggested reading in georgism? Looking at the wikipedia page I am amazed I don't remember anything from my very heterodox economic history class.
-
I do, let me write a post about it.

I hate to ask, as I am sure I have asked this before, but I keep seeing you refer to it, yet I never remember what it is... What is a Georgist, or "Georgism"(?) I presume? What is the number one place to read about it, and not just someone providing a take on it?
-
Georgism officially is all about land value taxation. But Ladejinsky, inspired by that idea, endorsed land redistribution.
-
Piggybacking on this, the Wikipedia page for Georgism is a good start
-
I figured I would start there, but I often find that people who are really into topic X or Y, they have serious reservations about parts of a given wiki page, so I wanted to ask where they would go for the best info, beyond wiki. Thanks!
-
r/georgism on reddit is also good if you have questions about any specific aspect.

From what I've read, the Zimbabwe program was *too* ambitious. The few experienced farmers they got to farm small land plots did well, but they redistributed so much land that people didn't know what to do with it all, so let it lie fallow.
-
It's working better now, farmers have gotten training, experience.https://www.ozy.com/fast-forward/small-scale-tobacco-farmers-are-giving-zimbabwe-reason-to-dream/82714 …
