45 years ago this month, the US and the USSR nearly blundered into a nuclear war (during the Arab-Israeli Yom Kippur War) because Nixon was drunk (coping with Watergate) and Brezhnev was delirious from an addiction to sleeping pills exacerbated by alcohol. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/09/opinion/stumbling-toward-armageddon.html?utm_content=buffer42fe8&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer …

Watched the original 'Red Dawn' last night. Still prefer life during the Cold War.

Because we could enjoy silly movies without having everyone bash them on Twitter?

Because we were involved in an epic struggle worth remembering. If your country had actually been taken over by communism, you wouldn't find it so silly.

It was the military aspect that was silly; obviously that kind of operation would be impossible. As for the epic struggle, I'm glad to have won it and put it behind us. The alternative would be the USSR still existing...

Actually it would probably be good if the USSR still existed, because it would provide a counterweight to China, and the presence of a socialist superpower would push America to the Right.

Beats being plunged into civil war over a SCOTUS confirmation. Or similar unfolding.

I think Martinez has an approximation of a point here. Having a commonly understood existential threat, at the very least, appears to have made American politics less of a kayfabe shitshow than it is now. The stakes were understood to be real.

I wish we had relative unity among our elites now like we did then. But I wouldn't be willing to bring back the USSR or similar nightmarish regime just to get that elite unity. Perspective!

We're not doing comparative statics on retroactive divine interventions in human history here - just evaluating whether having a strictly defined formal international rivalry weeded out the worst kinds of bullshit artists from politics in the US.
