They’ve certainly been destructive to their own people; I haven’t argued otherwise. I can’t say definitively that our repression is worse than theirs but it is at least on par, and certainly wider-ranging

Sure the entirety of Eastern Europe. I get that. What I don’t get is that people buy into the myth of American exceptionalism rather than honestly questioning our impact on world politics

This feels like some odd strawman and goalpost shift combo. Plenty of people are not happy about a great deal of America's interventionism while simultaneously being able to see that sometimes it turned out well, and also others have done worse than us.
