Noah is revisiting his China or bust argument. Here, I’m having trouble understanding his use of the word “should.”https://twitter.com/Noahpinion/status/1051676756933894144 …

15/Does this mean America should abandon our efforts to fight climate change? Of course not!!! We should be taxing carbon, building green infrastructure, researching green energy technology, etc.!

And sorry, but when exactly in Kyoto or Paris did "we Americans" exercise "moral leadership"?https://twitter.com/Noahpinion/status/1051675380711481344 …

11/Nor did China start slashing emissions after Kyoto, or after Paris. The idea that we Americans rule the world via our moral leadership is just another illusion of control.

Europe and Japan did, not us.

So maybe exercising some moral leadership on this front could make a difference, after all?

Maybe, but A) Europe and Japan's moral leadership didn't even sway *us*, much less China or anyone else. B) The U.S. actually has decreased emissions, and it's not clear that this has had any moral suasion effect. So, seems like wishful thinking.

OK, yeah, but: a) at least pre-Trump US soft power was arguably greater than that of Europe and Japan combined; b) it's early days.

Yes, perhaps we have simply not applied *enough* magic to make the magic work!

good one, But: 1) the reductions we've made to date hardly entitle us to hold ourselves up to the world as a model; and 2) soft power - not "magic" - will help us secure the binding agreements we need for the long term. Transactionalism (pay China) won't.

"soft power - not "magic" - will help us secure the binding agreements we need for the long term." <-- a statement totally lacking in evidence or backing, and seemingly denied by the experiences of Europe and Japan. Magical thinking.
