I don't want to get into a definition argument of what "avoid" or "mitigate" actually mean in practice, but there is a lot we can do to avoid outright catastrophe. However, that requires widespread change on the global front and soon.

Except CO2 in the environment is cumulative. Throughout the industrial revolution China wasn’t spewing the junk that the US and Europe spewed into the environment.
