but that’s what gaslighting has always meant!

This drives me insane. It has a very specific meaning referring to a kind of abuse where the abuser is literally, consciously trying to get you to not trust your own perceptions. The misuse of it is incredibly shitty.

I'll say that what I've seen of the term has mostly been things I agree with. It's stuff like "'trap' isn't transphobic, it's just Japanese" or Romney claiming he was never a never-Trumper. That's clearly gas-lighting to my eyes.

or when Fox says Antifa got violent with a sword at a protest and the picture is literally Proud Boys founder and friend of Richard Spencer Gavin McInnes holding a sword

That’s the natural evolution of buzzwords. They’re used properly at first, even though other words would fit just fine. Then they turn into “anyone I disagree with.” E.g. Mansplain, Manspread, Feminazi, Coon, Nazi, etc...

Which is a mild form of gaslighting (Ducks, runs)
-
It might show these days people consider “considering something they disagree with” equal to “questioning their own sanity”. Which sounds annoyingly right.

I started his drinking game for when people say "bad faith" on Twitter. Nearly died.

Similarly for "bot," it now in some circles seems to mean "person I disagree with"

It's definitely a difficult term to infer the meaning of based on usage - and that's how I came to learn it - here on Twitter. I've looked it up, and am still confused because of how frequently and arbitrarily it seems to be used. Glad you noted this.

I think this phenomenon occurs with every metalogical term. See: Fake News, ad hominem, etc.
