Japan's government implemented a tax cut for companies that raise wages, train workers, and boost capital investment in certain emerging technologies. So far, it's working. https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2018-10-10/japan-s-companies-ramp-up-spending-after-tax-change?srnd=opinion&utm_campaign=socialflow-organic&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&utm_content=view&cmpid%3D=socialflow-twitter-view …pic.twitter.com/4cKPRy43Wj

Imagine structuring a tax code to incentivize socially beneficial corporate behavior instead of maximize profits for already rich people. 🙄

Massive missing hole in the conventional wisdom in policy: some jobs are bad for you, and some are good, and they may momentarily pay the same. We want the ones that are good for people. People like mastering and learning stuff, for starters.

Some jobs produce value for your fellow humans and some don't. Like tricking people into predatory loans is a job, but not a good one. Making big money getting doctors to prescribe a $2000/month drug that is only 2% more effective than generic is a job, but not a good one.

Yeah, but that's a GOOD idea, so Congress will never pass it.

So it’s trickle down economics, but mandatory, instead of hallucinatory.

My issue with progressive government as a whole is that it is short term oriented, while human problems require generational solutions. Progressives tend to decry the short term thinking in business, while rarely applying the same standard to gov’t.

All central planning works on the short term. The problem arises if the incentives are misdirected. E.g. The internet of things dies as some new tech takes over, think the cd and the iphone. Government direction can’t move as fast as markets.
