"Yay for communism for making people more racist" is not a take I expected to see today. But hey, that's the great thing about Twitter...it always has something delightfully new and surprising.https://twitter.com/phl43/status/1051072728705499136 …

It was an interesting example of how social messages can backfire. State propaganda was officially anti-racist, so people regarded anti-racism as just another lie

This happened a lot in the USSR, and is why I think Russians in Israel, NYC, and Russia are so right-wing. Slogans about women's right and anti-colonialism backfire when the source isn't trusted

I think it's simpler. Immigrants from communist countries actually believe the right wing when they call their opponents communist. And with "anti-racism" being the propaganda of communism, assume all anti-racism is communist.

I think what many people miss about Communism is that in reality it created very static societies. You could not move around, change was infinitesimal, incumbents called the shots & there was a strong sense of who belonged somewhere and who not. Also conserved previous attitudes.

Could feel like being buried alive. But there's also nostalgia with some or even many. The stasis was the point: no surprises, no big changes, a sense of security and community, you were allowed to hate on outsiders. All this progressive & internationalist rhetoric was just that.

I am referring to Communism in the last decades. Early on there was also this restlessness and that you had to tear down everything older than yesterday. But the fellow travellers in the West never really caught on that it was long over.

Resulting mindset is similar to one in a feudal society where you are a serf & "adscriptus glebae" (adscript to the soil). Or maybe the material substructure was just feudalism, with a Communist ideological superstructure. West was much more dynamic with all its up and downsides.

It’s an interesting finding, but unclear exactly what the mechanism is even if well identified (east Germany” is an omnibus treatment)

Yeah like we know that East Germans are more suspicious of immigrants, even though they have less of them. We also know that East Germany was communist for decades. Not sure how you can show that those two things are inextricably linked.

I mean I can buy a spatial RD (not sure if that’s what they do) that shows the iron curtain itself had a causal effect on attitudes. What’s not clear is whether that was communism per se, isolationism, or any number of other things.

Black bloc anarchy communists also segregate into racial blocks because...reasons. The people who try hardest to show they’re not racist tend to be the most racists along side the most vocal racists. There’s also that tokenization of cotton club musicians in USSR for propaganda

@phl43 not as simple as communism. East Germany (East Elbia/Prussia) voted 50-60% for the Hitler coalition aka got Hitler elected. It's xenophobia/authoritarianism has deep historical roots.
